This exhibition is part of an annual exhibition series introducing materials collected by the Musashino Folklore Museum, the predecessor of the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. The Musashino Folklore Museum opened in 1954 and closed in 1991. The archive display room (now the Visitor Center) held exhibitions of archeological and folklore materials, and the outdoor exhibition area was known as the “Folk Tradition Park” which comprised two areas, the Ancient Village and the Edo Village, featuring building displays. After the Musashino Folklore Museum closed, some of its materials were passed on to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, where they remain today.
This exhibition presents a selection of materials collected by the Musashino Folklore Museum, including archeological items such as clay earrings (late Jōmon period, excavated at the Shimofuda Site, nationally designated Important Cultural Property), as well as signboards and matchboxes once found in everyday life around the city. Photographic panels also introduce the buildings of the Folk Tradition Park as they once were. We hope this exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the Folklore Museum that once stood on this very site.
